My Hero

Dean was supposed to be gone most of the month of June. Of course, there's a whole list of things he was going to miss out on...Ben's last baseball game, 5th grade graduation, scouting crossover for both kids...and Father's Day. Actual holiday dates mean very little in our family. We celebrate before, after, or once in a while over the phone. The kids and I switched into "dad's gone" mode and got on with things. I was sitting on the bleachers for Ben's last game trying to make a mental note of everything so I could tell Dean when I got to talk to him...it had been about 10 days. A couple of women behind me were talking about their husbands. "He didn't get home until 6:30" and "He's going to be gone all weekend" stuck in my brain. I did a mental eye roll. I wondered if those women ever prayed that their husband would come home from work...at all. I am so proud of my husband. Bursting with pride is more like it. In this global game of chicken, my husband has drawn a line in the sand. Not only does he take care of his family, but his crew. Men he might not know very well or at all. I cannot imagine the pressure he must be under. Fly into danger on purpose, do what you have to do on the ground, and fly out...keep all these men who have families that love them safe. While you're at it hold it all together and be a good example. Superman has nothing on Dean, he is my hero.
